Crochet Infinity Scarf

Inspiration

I’m a sucker for a pretty scarf! My husband and I were able to visit Paris a few years back and I almost had to buy an extra suitcase for all the scarves I bought (in my defense, some were gifts!). So it was quite a revelation for me when I realized that I had never actually crocheted any kind of infinity scarf or cowl?? What? How did that happen?!

This realization hit me a few days before Thanksgiving, so despite having tons of cooking to do (and 3 other WIPs needing attention), I went digging in my stash! Right away, the gorgeous mustardy color of this Yarn Bee Rustic Romance yarn caught my eye. I chose it mostly for the color, to be honest, but I knew the rustic marled texture would look fab with some chunky puffs, maybe mixed with some delicate “braids” … cue the swatching!

Construction and Supplies

I couldn’t be happier with the way this stitch pattern turned out! The crisscross texture of the puff stitch rows almost gives this scarf a cabled vibe, but with much less work! And I think the raised braids (super easy to do by just working the the “3rd loop” of the hdcs) adds a nice contrast. The front and back of the piece are very slightly different, but both sides are equally gorgeous – making it totally reversible!

Mustard Puff Infinity Cowl

This crochet infinity scarf is a great project if you are ready to move beyond basic stitches, but aren’t quite up to intricate stitch patterns or increasing and decreasing. It is worked in rows lengthwise to form a long, skinny rectangle which is then seamed together. Easy peasy!

SKILL LEVEL

Easy – Level 2

MATERIALS

  • Yarn: About 500 yards worsted weight (#4) yarn. I used about 2.5 skeins of Yarn Bee Rustic Romance (100g/220yds each) in Okie Wheat.
  • Size J (6.00mm) hook.
  • Yarn (tapestry) needle, scissors, and measuring tape.

DIMENSIONS

Written for Medium Adult, but length can be easily adjusted.

Measures 60” long (before seaming) and 7” wide.

GAUGE

13 sts x 10 rows = 4” square using hdc.

NOTES

  • This scarf is worked lengthwise in rows, then seamed to form a loop.
  • Special stitches:
    • Puff Stitch (PS): Insert hook into next st, *yo and pull up a loop, yo and insert hook into same st. Repeat from * 3 more times (8 loops on hook). Yo and pull through all 8 loops on hook. Ch 1 to close the stitch. Note: Each PS will count as 2 stitches for the stitch count of the row (one stitch is made when you create the puff and one stitch is made when you ch 1 to close).
  • “3rd loop only”: Half double crochet stitches have a 3rd loop that we will use in this pattern. When working in turned rows, the 3rd loop can be found just below the front loop of the “V” on the side of the work that is facing you. When instructed to work in “3rd loop only”, insert your hook into this special loop only. This creates a braided look on the opposite side of the pattern.
  • Technique used for seaming:
    • Mattress stitch – Line up the rows/stitches of the two pieces to be seamed. Using a yarn needle and corresponding color of yarn, insert needle into the first stitch from the inside/bottom of the seam out. Pull through. Then insert into the corresponding stitch on the 2nd piece from the inside out. Continue sewing in this way as if you were lacing a shoe. Give your yarn a tug every inch or so to keep the seam tight. See a video of this technique here.
  • The Ch 1 turning chain used throughout does NOT count as a stitch.
  • To adjust the length, chain any ODD number to start.
  • Pattern written in US terms.
  • Abbreviations
    • ch = chain
    • hdc = half double crochet
    • PS = puff stitch (see Special Stitches)
    • sc =single crochet
    • sk = skip
    • st =stitch
    • yo = yarn over

PATTERN

Ch 175 (or any ODD number if you want to adjust the length).

Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch. Ch 1, turn. <174 sc>

Row 2: Sc in the 1st st, *sk next st, PS in next. Repeat from * until the second to last stitch, sc in last st. Ch 1, turn. <174 sts>

Note – each puff stitch counts as two sts, one from the puff and one from the ch 1.

Row 3: Repeat Row 2.

Row 4: Hdc in each st (Remember that each puff stitch counts as two stitches, you will hdc in each of these). Ch 1, turn. <174 hdc>

Row 5: Hdc in the 3rd loop only in each st. Ch 1, turn. <174 hdc>

Row 6: Hdc in the 3rd loop only in each st. Ch 1, turn. <174 hdc>

Row 7: Sc in the 3rd loop only in each st. Ch 1, turn. <174 sc>

Rows 8 – 13: Sc in the 1st st, *sk next st, PS in next. Repeat from * until the second to last stitch, sc in last st. Ch 1, turn. <174 sts>

Row 14: Hdc in each st. Ch 1, turn. <174 hdc>

Row 15: Hdc in 3rd loop only in each st. Ch 1, turn. <174 hdc>

Row 16: Hdc in 3rd loop only in each st. Ch 1, turn. <174 hdc>

Row 17: Sc in 3rd loop only in each st. Ch 1, turn. <174 sc>

Rows 18 -19: Sc in the 1st st, *sk next st, PS in next. Repeat from * until the second to last stitch, sc in last st. Ch 1, turn. <174 sts>

Row 20: Sc in each st. <174 sc>

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Weave in any other ends.

*I recommend blocking the rectangle at this point. The puff stitches can pucker a bit and it’s much easier to block before seaming.*

Seaming:

  • Fold the rectangle in half lengthwise, lining up the rows.
crochet infinity scarf seaming
  • Thread a yarn needle with the long tail and use a mattress stitch to sew the two ends together.
use a mattress stitch to seam the cowl
  • Fasten off, weave in the end and admire your beautiful new scarf!
